Nala's Journey: It All Started with One Abandoned Kitten

Sometimes, the biggest adventures in life begin with the smallest, most unexpected moments. For me, it all started with one abandoned kitten.

Back in 2018, I set off on an epic journey: cycling across Europe with the dream of eventually circling the globe. My goal was simple - to see the world, connect with its people, and embrace the challenges and beauty of life on the road. Every day brought new landscapes, new faces, and new lessons. But I never could have predicted that one tiny, vulnerable creature would change my life forever.

Along the way, on the side of a mountain by the Bosnia-Montenegro border, I heard a tiny, desperate meow. The cries caught my attention, so I stopped and followed the sound, discovering a small, scruffy little kitten running towards me. It didn’t take long for me to realise that this friendly, hungry stray had likely been abandoned and wouldn’t survive on her own in the wilderness. Without hesitation, I scooped her up gently, placed her in the front bag of my bike and took her to the nearest vet (which involved sneaking her across a border) My very first plan was to find her a loving home as i never thought in a million years a kitten would enjoy staying on a bike, but as we set off cycling she soon climbed out of the bag, up my arm and snuggled into my neck. It was at this moment i thought to myself that if she is happy on the bike then why cant i travel with her. I named her Nala, after the lioness character from The Lion King, quite simply because that was my favourite film growing up. This was the beginning of a bond that would shape not only my journey but countless lives to come.

From the very first moment, Nala showed a courage and spirit that belied her small size. She was playful, affectionate, and remarkably resilient. As I continued my travels, Nala became more than just a rescued kitten; she became my steadfast companion. She would ride along on the handlebars, perch on my shoulder, or curl up beside me in campsites, always ready to explore the world by my side. Together, we experienced the highs and lows of life on the road, from long, exhausting climbs up mountain passes to the quiet magic of starry nights far from city lights.

Our story quickly captured the hearts of people everywhere. Videos and photos of me and Nala traveling together went viral, inspiring millions. People were charmed not only by our adventurous spirit but also by the clear, undeniable bond between a man and the animal I had saved. Through our journey, we showed that kindness and compassion can travel as far as people do, and that sometimes, the simplest acts of care have the most profound impact.

Saving Nala was just the beginning, but I knew that there were countless other animals, each with their own story of hardship, waiting for a second chance. Over the years, as I rescued more animals along the way, the vision for Nala’s Ark began to take shape. I wanted to create a place that could provide not just care, but hope - a place where every animal, no matter its past, could experience safety, love, and the opportunity to thrive.

Now, that dream has become a reality. Nala’s Ark exists to advocate for animals who need our help. From the first tiny kitten rescued on a mountain road to the many animals that have found refuge through our charity, every life matters. Nala’s Ark is a testament to the idea that compassion is contagious, that one act of kindness can ripple outward to change the world, and that even the smallest creature can inspire a movement.

Every animal that I have rescued alongside Nala has a story of their own. Tales of fear overcome by trust, of injuries healed, and of once abandoned animals finding forever homes fill the pages of our journey.
